Simon Barere
by Silvia Francesca Maglione
As you might recall, this famous Russian pianist passed away on April 2, 1951 on stage while performing the Grieg A minor piano concerto with Eugene Ormandy directing the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. Simon Barere is most remembered for his unique “finger dexterity” and his superior technique. He played the most wonderful pianissimo passages at a very fast tempo, which require an exceptional ability on the piano. He could interpret poetically even the hardest bravura passages, quasi glissandos, and the most extreme virtuosic transcriptions.
Simon Barere was one of the most brilliant pianist ever alive, but yet, he has been quickly forgotten. Today, more than 55 years after his death, a “new” CD has come out. This collection includes some of the most amazing, unedited, integral editions of his last few concerts, recorded a few days before his premature death.
Every musician and music-lover part of the Classical music community, should never forget Simon Barere’s distinguished skilful technique. His technique greatly added to our modern conception of glissando interpretations, and of pianist general ability.
Thank you Simon.
