What is music?

by David James

What is music? Well you’re obviously going to get various answers to this question, but let’s see how far we get…
Technically music is a series of wavelengths one after another, at different frequencies, however music means different things to different people, so what’s music to some people isn’t to others. For example, many people believe that music is something pleasant to the ear, such as bird song. Oliver Messiaen is very famous for including bird song in his compositions. Its not often you find someone calling the sound of a fog horn beautiful music, as for one, its annoying, as well as only sounding one tone. On the other hand, John Cage, a composer, believed that everyday sounds were music, and he included these in his works. He wanted everyday objects to be transformed into musical instruments, but I wouldn’t get your pots and pans out, you may irritate your neighbours!
Many feel that heavy metal and rock doesn’t count as music, as some of the songs from this area have loud perhaps screaming vocalists, this makes some people feel uncomfortable, but there are avid fans of it, just as there are fans of classical music, or any other genres.
A lot of modern music nowadays is disliked by the older generation perhaps because they’re not used to it, just as in the day of great composers such as Mozart, they would create ground breaking new compositions and the audience is very likely to disapprove or even laugh. Perhaps change is the key factor here; it takes a generation to get used to it.
