New Bach cantata discovered!
by Silvia Francesca Maglione
Bach Lovers rejoice!
A new cantata has been discovered! It’s numbered as the BWV 1127, and it’s a one-movement cantata. It’s a worshipping movement with 12 stanzas written by the poet Johann Anton Mylius. This cantata was composed in honour of the 45th birthday of Duke Ernst of Saxony-Weimar, celebrated in 1713. The name of this cantata is Alles mit Gott und ohn’ihm (everything with God, nothing without him), and it lasts about 45 minutes.
When Michael Maul discovered the BWV 1127 in Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek of Weimar, Eliot Gardiner (English) and Masaaki Suzuki (Japanese) hasted in recording the first interpretations with their respective orchestras. Gardiner was the first director recording it (partially), for his Soli Deo Gloria project. Suzuki took this further by recording all of it. Suzuki is currently working on a project involving the integral recording of Bach’s works.
Shortly, many other directors will record and perform this cantata, and we will be able to appreciate another piece in the amazing repertoire of one of the greatest composers who has ever lived.
